The Bengals were a game bunch on Sunday against the Patriots, at least for a half. After trailing by only three at halftime and looking pretty good in the process, things fell apart for Cincinnati in the second half, eventually falling 34-13 and taking their record to 1-13 on the season. This line stayed steady at 9.5 for most of the week in spite of heavy action on the Patriots.
Right up until kickoff, we saw this line move all the way to 10.5 with the the Over/ Under getting bet down all the way down to 40. The Bengals, for the most part, played a very good defensive game—possibly their best of the season—limiting Tom Brady to only 128 yards and a touchdown. It was the turnovers in the second half that really did in the Bengals and solidified their spot in the top of next year’s draft.
Unless Cincinnati wins out, it looks as though they will be picking first in the draft next year and in all likelihood, they will be looking at LSU quarterback Joe Burrow. Burrow is now the heavy favorite to go No. 1 in the draft with odds of -250. Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has the second-best odds of any QB to go number one with +1200. If the Bengals decide to go in another direction and try to bolster their defense, Ohio State’s Chase Young will also be available and his odds of being drafted No. 1 now currently sit at +250.
It looks as though Burrow will be the guy next year for the Bengals and (if drafted) I expect him start Week 1. Who knows if Burrow will be the answer but we all know your team is nothing in the NFL without a top notch QB so the LSU playcaller seems like a good place to start.
The Bengals Odds to Officially Grab the Top Spot in Next Year’s Draft
Cincinnati heads down to Miami on Sunday to take on the Dolphins in what earlier this season was expected to be a battle for the No. 1 pick in the draft. But with the Bengals sitting at 1-13 and Miami at 3-11, after the Dolphins 36-20 loss to the Giants last week, it looks as though the top pick has been sewn up by the Bengals. Although with a win here and a week 17 win against Cleveland at home, the Bengals could somehow make things worse for themselves and wind up with the No. 2 pick. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen and I don’t really expect it to.
After the horrible start Miami had to begin the season, they have played some pretty good football over the past couple months. The Dolphins opened as 1.5 point favorites in this one and early action on Cincinnati has bet the game down to a pick ‘em. The Over/Under has been set at 46.5 with even action on both sides so far. I have liked what I have seen from the Dolphins in recent weeks and I expect them to take care of a weary Bengals team that is just playing out the string and waiting for spring. Bengals clinch that No. 1 pick on Sunday and Joe Burrow will be Bengal next season.
